It’s been a fun, scaring, exciting week for me at DesignBoatSchool. At the start, I was nervous and clueless. Over the course of time I got familiarised with students and my mentor. The environment in which design takes place has a huge effect on the output of the designers within it. Design Boat School is an amazing place to create, learn, share, critique, and collaborate.
As part of the learning, we were divided into teams and given a domain (which is parenting for our team) for UI/UX project. Our first week task was to come up with a concept and problem statement. It can be nerve-wracking and challenging at times, but getting out of our own heads and incorporating collaboration into our design processes can make us all better designers. Working towards one unified idea also allows us to learn collective processes and knowledge.
I did not realise the depth involved in parenting until i started understanding this domain and dived into the concept to see what are the actual problems in today’s world. we jotted down few problems and agreed on a concept on developmental disabilities. In today’s world parenting is very difficult and i often hear parents and children complaining about it. When this is the condition of normal parents, just imagine the condition of parents of children with developmental disability.
When a child with one or more disabilities is born into a family, parents often experience a range of emotions like shock, grief, anger, depression that are somewhat similar to those experienced upon learning about death of loved ones. Few parents choose to leave their children, few loose confidence because they are scared if their relatives and society will accept them. While experiencing such emotional reactions, require a period of time to adjust and during this time parenting may get affected. If these children are raised under good parenting conditions the child will grow up to be an adult who may have a disability but will be a wonderful person to be around. We will create a platform to guide and help on parenting for families suffering from developmental disabilities.
There were other brilliant ideas presented by other team members in different domains. Feels good to learn around creative and open minds. Hoping to finish my 14 weeks with a blast.
